XP Home network access SLOW!!!!!

I use Windows XP pro with a W2K server and a W2k pro machine. When I first installed XP pro I was having to wait 15 mins or more in order to access network shares on the W2k machines. Well I found a registry hack that elemented the wait by deleting two Keys in the XP pro registry. I was able to open file shares without a wait. Now both my dad and my uncle use XP home with a mix of W2k machines and Win98 machines on their networks. They have the same slow a$$ access time to any network shares on their other machines. I tried deleting those two keys that I deleted in XP pro and it did not improve access times. Another thing I noticed was that there was no option in explorer to enable Advanced file&print sharing in XP home as there is in XP pro. Could this be the key? I'm stumped, does anybody have an answer to this problem?

I'm sorry I can't give you the reply you seek, it may be possible for another user to give you this. I am asking you to post on this thread the Registry hack that eliminates the waiting time you experienced. TIA

Mic here you go. Hope it works for you.
In XP, select Run from your start menu. Type "regedit" in the box and click OK. Once you're in Regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace Now, simply delete the two keys (a bunch of long numbers and letters) under this, which are the "Printers" and "Scheduled Tasks" keys.

First question is your win2k server set up as a domain controller? Second question is can you ping by computer name?

I had the same problem with my 2000 and XP nodes. I installed the ipx protocall on both of the PC's, and now everthing is fast. I do not know how well ipx will work on 9x or me.

Although NetBEUI would be a faster protocol (and my prefered protocol for windows machines on the same subnet) by a bit, Jeremy is correct in that the ipx/spx protocol may solve your Dad's issue. I would imagine from your description of what is happening that there is sharing going on with an internet connection. That is more than likely leading to DNS name resolution problems.

Regarding the "Advanced file&print sharing in XP home" see Xp post 27171. It is not a feature of the Home version, remember M$ said the home version didn't have full blown network capabilities (its to stop companies from using the cheaper version).
