HI, I am using XP and I'm having massive problems trying to create a wireless network between my PC (name "Jack")and my laptop (name "Jack-lappy"). Both of the computers have the same workgroup name - "MSHOME". I have installed a wireless router on my PC and it is working fine, in fact I can actually view the files on my laptop from my PC so there's no problems that way... its just when I try to access the files on my PC from my laptop that the troubles arise. On my laptop, in "view workgroup computers" I can see both PC's fine, however when I click on my desktop PC's icon I get this error message: "\\Jack is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer". I have searched for help on this topic in the forums, but have only found that i shoudl go to admin tools, then local security policy. I dont have this! is it an XP Pro thing? How do i all access otherwise?
Thanks a lot

I get that kind of errors when I'm having trouble with firewalls. If you have firewalls, turn them of temporatily and try again...

XP Home doesn't have Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Local Security Policy

Try this, lifted from another forum:

(Not sure the links work but a Google search will find ntrights.exe)

"If you have win xp home edition, this is the only way to get over the problem as the local settings & security policy are not available in Administration Tools.
As far as I know, user rights policies applies to WinXP Home as well, you just don't have a builtin GUI tool to see/change them.

You should be able to set/remove those privileges with the Windows 2003 resource kit command line tool ntrights.exe.

Ntrights.exe is in the free Win2k3 resource kit:

Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=4544
or
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en
The kit will install on WinXP or later.

After installation, click on: Start, All Programs, Windows Resource Kit Tools, Command Shell

Then enter the following commands. (Attention: they are case sensitive.)

net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

The first command enables network access for Guest, the two subsequent ones change two different policies to allow network access for Guest.

This has been confirmed to work by several users."

Let us know if it works.

Oh lordy. Thanks for that advice, it did something, however, now the message is 'Access is Denied'!! (after the same network permissions stuff) It is rather difficult isn't it! I read somewhere that i should unset and reset all my shared folders to make it work, but i dont see how that would work seeing as i cant even access it in workgroup computers... what di you think?

Have you shared the folders (or the C drive, etc) on each machine?
Select a folder(or C drive, etc) that you want access to and right click it, click on sharing/security and then check off "share" folder. I am using XP Pro so I don't remember what it says exactly but you must do this on each machine. Also keep in mind that you cannot share the Program Files folder, but you can share individual folders inside the Program file.
To test to see if it is working, you should be able to see inside most files at the root of C:
If you see some, then your network is okay. But then you'll have to tweak individual files/folders to get additional permission to share them.

This taken from another forum, worked for me:

"Start>Run>Regedit>Hkey_Local_Machine>System>Current Control set>Control>Lsa. Now open the lsa folder... check the "restrict anonymous" file, NOT NOT NOT the "restrict anonymoussam" file. Make sure the Restrict Anonymous file value is set to zero(0) and not one(1). If the value is set to one(1) change it to zero(0) by double clicking on the words restrict anonymous. From here go to file and exit. Now try to connect to this system from another system or vice versa. You may need to repeat this action on the systems on your network that you cannot connect to."
