A question!
Having had a version of xp home on a system which wasnt activated (as it was already on another machine), the activation expired. I had a new version of XP Professional and wanted to use it. Firstly I installed xp pro on a different HD and deleted the partition on which xp home existed, created a new patition (exactly the same as the original and formated it using fat32 as all partitons (4 in all) on the drive are fat32). The problem is when starting the machine I always get a multiboot option (home and pro.) even though xp home is completely gone. I did a fixboot and a fixmbr but still the option exists...and if left to boot itself the home os is on top and the default os and so trys to start. Can this be easily rectified??
The machine has two hd's c:(2.5 GB) and d: which has 4 partions (40GB)I was unable to uninstall xp home as the activation period had expired...could not log on, so i deleted it as above

Easy! But be careful. Restart the computer and log on to windows. Then open my computer and click opn drive C. Then click on Tools/Folder options/View. Then click on Show hidden and system files. Then clear the check box "Hide protected operating sytem files", click apply and ok. Then you will see a file called boot.ini. Right click and select properties, and clear the check box "Read only". Now open this file with notepad. Delete the offending line completely and move the next line up. Click file and save, then close the file. When you reboot there will be no more problems.
Just to be sure, i will give you an example
[boot loader]
timeout=5 <--------Why not change this to 0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Pro" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Home" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Windows 2000" /fastdetect
c:\windows="Windows 98 SE"Now suppose we want to remove windows xp home then boot.ini should appear as below
Hide all the o/s files and reprotect boot.ini etc.[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Pro" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Windows 2000" /fastdetect
c:\windows="Windows 98 SE"Hope it all works for you.

To Mr Peacock
Thankyou for your advice. Seems to have worked brilliantly.
Whilst I am here and this question does not belong here i know, but can you tell me if hypertransport technology on an AMD 3200+ clawhammer (90 nm) is always on? sounds silly but i ran a utility ..sisandra.. i think (im at work and not at my pc)and it indicated it was not.? My mobo is foxconn K8S..6lrs from memory. Unless the HT indicates for a pentium??thanks again
