now i've been workin with computers for years now, and i can't get this. When i boot up XP, it does the startup screen, and before when it's supposed to show the XP Home screen where the green bar goes across in the middle, instead the whole screen goes black and a cursor constantly blinks in the upper left hand corner. at this point, the computer wont respond to anything. BUT... i have windows 98 on here right now and it works. What is the deal with that? Any help would be great.. thanks.

great suggestions, all of them.. but they're all based on the idea that it boots as far as the blue welcome screen, which it doesn't, so F8 isn't going to work.. any other suggestions would be helpful
