I have a HP ZV600 Laptop that I'm trying to fix for a friend. When I try to boot up the system nothing shows up. I've tried to boot in safe mode but it freezes at the mup.sys
I've tried to do a fresh install from cd but it freezes up when it gets to "windows setup is starting". I've tried a new 512 MB Ram chip but it still does the same thing. I've tried a new hard drive with the same results. I have noticed from looking on the outside that the laptop has been droped. I'm running out of things that i can think of that might be wrong with it. Any help would be most apperciated.

What OS you're trying to install it into your computer? If Win XP here are the System Requirements:
Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Professional:
•PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
•128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
•1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*
•Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
•CD-ROM or DVD drive
•Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing deviceFirst know the System Requirements if it's ok to install the OS.

I'm sure that there are a host of issues that could cause this problem, however, I have known it to be related to three: ACPI enable/disable in BIOS;faulty CMOS battery; defective or malfunctioning hardware.
Enter BIOS - Power Management settings - look
for “ACPI Aware O/S” -- if it's there (and it
may not be) and if it is set to no, set it to yes. If it's set to yes, set it to no. Save your settings and exit BIOS. That might do it for you.You can try a simple test to see if it's CMOS related. Remove the CMOS battery and try booting w/o it. It it boots, replace the battery with a new one.
Then again, since you say that it appears to have
been dropped a time or two, it could be damaged
hardware or maybe, if you're lucky, loosely
connected hardware. Can't say for sure that it's any of these but chances are good that it is one of them. Or it could be as SHENGTON has posted. Either way, good luck to you.
