Comment:

Well, trying to install XP Home for a friend. I get through everything up until part of the copying files phase. The first file that won't copy is kodak_(something), I can skip the file (which causes repeated issues with other files not copying) or I can retry copying said file (which does not work) or I can Quit (which is also not acceptable). New 80 Gig HD (just opened it), New IDE Cables (just opened their package), New CD (used 2 different, just opened them prior to trying them, CD's of XP Home), New CD Drives (used 2 different, just opened them prior to trying them, CD Drives) and zilch, nada, zip, zero. Reformated the drive 3 seperate times from boot disk and 3 seperate times from the Home CD. Both format types FAT and NTFS. I'm at the point of breaking out the ball-peen hammer and going to town. Figured I'd check here before wresting some satisfaction out of today with physical violence perpetrated toward technology. Thank you in advance.

Homicidally,

Maurice

Did you try removing all periphial devices except the video card? Then reinstall them one at a time.

Please post back within 24 hours or I will delete the post from my follow up list. Thanks. It would be a courtesy if you would post back and let us know if the fix worked or not.

I would try that - but I can't even get the OS to install in the first place so for all intents and purposes none of the periphial devices even exist to the OS because there isn't an OS yet.

None-the-less though I'll give it a shot and see what I can see.

I had to install win98se and then install XP, that's the only way I could get it going

Hope this helps

Did you create a dual boot system or did you upgrade Win98 to XP? Upgrading is NOT the way to go. I would make sure that the CD drive is not on the same cable as the hard drive & maybe reduced the RAM to 512. I'm surprised you didn't have any probs installing Win98 with a Gig of RAM.

Most common cause of failure to copy various files during instal of XP is faulty or incompatible ram. test with memtest86. if you have more than one stick of ram then test each stick separately. If they test ok with no errors then try installing the operating system with only one stick in the machine. Reinsert the other stick after XP is installed.

when loading the xp files, look to the bottom bar, when it says press f6 to install drivers, start to tap f5, keep tapping untill a pop up appears that says pc type, click on standard pc, or i486 pc, then press enter.
i believe that this cuts out the hardware check and just installs all regular drivers, it always works for me

alternatively try an old cd player, the 52X can be too fast for some installations.
