ok, this is strange. installation of windows xp (and sp1) works perfect. several restarts and installation of several drivers and/or programs without problem. then it suddenly hangs on mup.sys while starting windows again. i made 8 reinstalls and tried everything. two parallel installtions suddenly don't work both. safe mode does not work either. i have no pci-cards, just the motherboard gigabyte ga-7n400pro2 and matrox millennium p750. who has an idea what the problem could be about?

when this happened to me, it was broken drivers for the onboard audio. I would try backing up to a previous version (or the newest if you aren't already).
As for not getting to safe mode, run chkdsk from the xp install cd recovery console, doing that brought me up ONCE, at which point i removed the mobo/vid drivers then reinstalled them, and all was wellif it ain't broke... it doesn't have enough features yet

that did not work. i tried samsung ram and an ide hd - still the same problem. today at my second gigabyte call, they told me that there might be problems with matrox graphic cards. fantastic that you neither find that on gigabyte's nor on matrox's hp.
so i'm afraid that i will have to change my motherboard. any idea which board is good, has a lo onboard (sata, lan, raid, firewire) and works with matrox p750???

Try disabling APIC in BIOS, that worked like magic for me and I had EXACT same symptom - hanging at mup.sys in safe mode and regular. Please note: this is APIC mode NOT ACPI - APIC has to do with IRQ assignment and can cause hard to see conflicts.
hi there

i solved the problem by updating the graphic card bios (did not even know it has a bios).
thanks to everyone.
