XP hangs on installation

Windows XP hangs when installing. Always stops at 'Preparing Installation - Analyzing your computer' with 71 minutes to go. I've pulled all USB and sound devices, but still hangs at the same spot. What else should I try?

I had the same problem the only way it would load if I took out some memeory I have 1 gig of memory and I had to take out 512 meg before it would load.
