I'm having problems installing XP Pro on an older notebook.
It's a Dell Inspiron 7000 (D300GT), PII - 190 MB RAM
Installation goes just fine until it reaches a certain point, then the screen goes black and the whole system hangs. When I do a forced re-boot the installation continues but hangs again at the same point: 34 minutes remaining, with the status bar reading "installing devices".
I did run a compatability report beforehand which said the following:
"Setup has found hardware on your computer that is incompatible with(that is, it does not work with) Windows XP.Hardware That Might Need Additional Files
The following hardware might need additional files in order to work with Windows XP. Contact your hardware vendors to obtain Windows XP compatible updates.
Please note that some of the following entries might be software that is registered as hardware.
Network adapters
WAN Miniport (ATW)
Sound, video and game controllers
LuxSonor DVD decoder card (LS242)"
I'm assuming that the video controller may be causing the trouble. If so, what can I do to allow installation to complete?I'm planning to download the correct drivers from Dell, but how do I apply them during install?
Any other ideas? It was a very stable system under W98. No such problems.
Thanks in advance.

have you tried downloadin SP1 and slipstreaming it into your XP version so you can install with SP1 already installed? It might solve your problem, but I'm not sure, it's just a wild guess :)

How do you download SP1 without installing it automatically on whatever machine you're downloading it to?
Then how would you "slipstream" it into a clean install?

www.windows help.net/WindowsXP/winxp-sp1-bootcd.html
This link gives step by step instructions on how to slipstream sp1. I am not possitive but I think there is also a way you can add additional drivers to the setup disk.

i suggest try following,
1. remove your wan card
2. remove your dvd decoder card
then install xp and put back above items back, you may have to update drivers for them.or, look here
