XP hangs at welcome screen

I'm posting for a friend that has quite a problem. Windows Media Player attempted an auto-update and locked the system up. After a forced shut down XP hangs at the welcome screen. He can't get it to boot to the install CD and recovery console and can't get to system restore. A rock and a hard place for sure. He using XP Pro and is an experienced computer user but this is a new one. Thanks Rick
