xp hang up

my system hangs at the loading bar, can watch the little green lite all day (really) always have to hold the power button in until it shuts off and then power on again and then select some option to start and then its fine. Does this harm the computer to do this? xp came installed on this computer and it is the only time this problem occurs. hibernate is fine. hangs up nowhere else. has done this from day one. suggestions?

make sure your antivirus program is not configured to do a startup scan.
