Hi. I know it sounds crazy, but... is there a possibility to boot XP from a DVD? instead from a Hard Disk?, let me explain:

I know Nero can make boot CDs and DVDs (I made a few ones) now I want to go far... I want to boot from DVD... see the startup logo... and see the desktop of Win XP and even work in it, obviously saving my personal files or docs in a flash drive or something. Now...

1. I dont tried or even think this before, I had this crazy idea 20 minutes ago.

2. I know XP requires a HD to install (or not?).

3. This is possible in Win 3.11 (In fact I made this 2 years ago, am a fan of 3.11) just making a Dos7.1 based boot CD, copyng in it all the files from C:\ making a properly autoexec.bat and config.sys and setting the bios to boot from CD, it's easy to do.

4. I think it's possible in Win95 even in Win98.

5. I guess that if we could install XP in a CD (or DVD cause the 1.5gb installation) the pagefile must be set to: Without Page File, in Virtual Memory settings.

6. I guess it could be possible do this using Ghost or other alike program (dont know), in that case we could have some useful programs (like mame32, or Office) already installed in the image before restoring (utopicly) in the DVD... really, I dont know how to make this... it's just an idea...

7. I think if it works it could be possible boot and start windowsXP or anything from a flash drive with enough space.

8. I have all my programs licenced, even Winzip, so I think I can install all what I want where I want, even in my freaky brain if I could.

9. I think am crazy and I guess I have a lot of free time to have this (usualy) crazy ideas.

10. Sorry... really sorry for the long message.

11. I guess this gonna be the coolest and larger topic ever posted, ready for the 100 replyes?

12. Any ideas???

Thanks in advance.
And you're right... I dont wanna buy an HD :)

Some folks claim you CAN run WinXP from a removeable drive. Microsoft has other ideas.

If you were going to install WinXP to both your desktop computer AND a removeable drive that would be in violation of your EULA.

As far as what can/ could be done with previous versions of Windows is concerned. Microsoft has ALWAYS maintained 1 licence = 1 computer.

However, in the past they had no way to stop multiple installations using the same key.

As you know WinXP is different in that you must register in a set amount of time or the OS will stop working.

Take your HDrive out and connect to a different computer and it may not boot.

Perhaps not exactly what you want, but look at these

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

http://www.ubcd4win.com/ (this uses barts pe)

http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/09... (this puts barts pe on a usb)

Or, consider, Live Linux cd's, like Ubuntu PclinuxOS.

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

which folks?

well, I have licenced versions of almost all Microsoft products and I already know the EULA issues but it is just for learning an experimental purposes "nobody" says I or you will do that in fact.

Running a full XP install is one thing, but the various PE-ish live CDs have a lot to offer. You can run a fair number of apps, and if you find "standalone" or "portable apps"

This is the best forum I've found on the subject:

Linux is far more advanced than the PE "distros", is relatively easy to install to compact flash or USB, and would run nicely on the specs you mention.
There are many tutorials on the net. I suggest you start with Damn Small Linux, then explore Knoppix for starters.

You can do MUCH more with Linux running from flash/USB/liveCD, but try both and most of all, learn while having fun!
Want a mame liveCD? You could boot the .iso image from flash.

Yeah live linux is great, as was said above try damb small linux, I also like puppy.
Incase you didn't no, you can (in most cases) work with your xp files from a linux live cd.

In regards to your question, xp can be installed to flash, but not only are you breaking your xp licence, you are breaking some other laws coz you have to modifie some setup files.

BEN.

My preference for live Linux is Simply Mepis 6.5. It can also be installed to your hard drive. Another benefit of this OS is that you can examine all partitions whether they be XP or linux. Ive used these Live discs to recover files from corrupt partition volumes. Check it out, you wont be disappointed.
