First of all, 256 mb of ram is not that much anymore. Most likely if it is a store bought computer (like a Dell or Gateway or something similar) you are running all kinds of programs in the background as well. They are the new breed of solicitors with all the pre-installed garbage they force you to have. I would try hitting ctrl+alt+delete and see if there are any other programs running. If so close all of them out BEFORE you run the game. Make sure that you don't have a lot of stuff in your background running, as those games are resource intensive and some stuff uses a lot of resources. Try going into start->run->then type "msconfig". Once you see a screen titled system configuration wizard find the startup tab and uncheck all unnecessary programs that are starting up with your computer. You will need to reboot after this. Hopefully cleaning up some of the garbage will free up some of your resources. You can try adding another stick of ram as well, just make sure you match the speeds (pc 2100 etc.) that are listed for your computer.
