download a 9x bootdisk from bootdisk.com, boot from it, then type " format /u c: " minus the " " it is not possible to format drive c: from within any windows pc, how can you format the drive that contains the command ?

of course it's possible to format the c: drive even if it contains the format command. when starting format.exe it loads into memory and then stays there until your computer is restarted. but in win xp it's not possible, cause this OS is not dos-based and doesn't contain the command line.

You run the recovery console with the XP cd! The commands to format the drive are on the cd. It's no different than using a dos floppy to format Windows 98 or Me except that you are using the cd to get to the command line. It's not that complicated. With NTFS there is no dos available for formatting as dos can't see NTFS partitions.

unfortuneley i have to tell you that they are right. you cant format your primary partition, but not because there ainīt no format program, but because there is a anti self destruct function in XP.
