Hi, A mate has just landed me with his pc which won't boot properly...I've only ever used 98 so his xp system is a bit of a minefield! It's a Tiny built pc..(Tiny logo shows on boot-up)...it seems to be underpowered for xp..800mhz cpu & only 32megs of Ram....

The trouble is this...the computer will turn on & start to load the operating system..(You get the windows xp logo & a blue "loading" bar)...There is disk activity during this period so it must be loading the operating system..Then the screen turns black & then into a maroon colour & the system reboots & starts all over again.....You don't get to a desktop..I've tried safe-mode..same prob..I've tried that option to load using last known good configuration..still reboots...

It will boot to dos using his floppy disk but he never made one from xp the floppy is win98! (I guess a disk scan is possible should all else fail)..

If anyone has any ideas would appreciate hearing em..just getting into windows would be a start!.cheers..Andy

Could be a lot of things, but when you get the black screen check the activity light to see if there is a momentary power loss. If that doesn't work for you, try swapping the power supply and make sure it puts out adequate watts (250 at least; 300+ more better). If this is bum advice, I am sure someone will correct me.
However, I had the same problem when first installing XP and the power supply was the culpret. Good luck.

800mhz is plenty of cpu for xp but 256megs of ram minimum. 512 is better.

The RAM....sorry little oversight on my part..I was reading the ram amount of the graphics card..:¬\

OK I just found out the bloke had downloaded a windows update prior to the pc running slow & then having the probs he has now....Judging by other posts here about an update it looks like this is the probable cause..

Anyway...He's decided he wants me to reinstall his old 98 anyway so that makes my post a waste of time! Just nipped on ere to say thanks Chuck/Frank/Dave for taking the time to help out...appreciated..Andy :¬)
