I have a slight problem with Windows XP and blank media. I have an HP, fairly new with a TSST Corp. DVDRW drive. Recently, the drive has been acting odd, and now it can't even read blank CDs. It reads normal CDs fine, but one problem with that is that the name of the CD, or the icon for it, does not show up on Windows Explorer. So, I tried to install a new CDRW drive in there. It works fine, except for the fact that it can't read blanks either. It read blank CDs in my other computer running Windows 98SE. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Thanks a lot.

Not sure what you mean by "Read" blank CDs, but if the CD is blank, there is no data and no volume name. Thus, nothing to read. This is normal behavior.
Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

Maybe means recognizing blank CDs.

Recognising, yes. And Autoplay, also. The autoplay feature is broken for whatever reason. Usually when you put in a CD, Windows Explorer shows the name of the CD, and the icon. Now, it just says DVD Drive. When it DOES work, and I try to put another CD in, this is the odd part. Windows does not recognise the disc, and when you open up E:\, it shows all the files from the previous disc! Sorry if this is confusing, but I am baffled by this. If anyone can help, please do, I'll clear something up if it was too confusing. Thanks.

BTW, this is no longer a problem with just Blank CDs. All my CDs are having this problem, and it's happening with both my drives.

For testing purpose, insert any installation CD. Does autoplay work? If it does in one drive, remove the installation CD and put it in the other. Does autoplay also work?

@Chuck 2: Thanks a lot, I'll check all those out.
@XpUser: I tried that, and both fail to Autoplay.

Now...I went to this link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314939, which seemed to be my problem, almost exactly. But it said the solution is to get the latest Service Pack, and I already have SP2.

Can you read burned CDs or just pressed discs? What CD burning software do you have installed?

The problem was resolved. I went into the registry (with the help of ome of Chuck 2's links, thanks again) and turned on Autoplay, which was mysteriously turned off. Thanks for all your help.
