I have Win XP Pro on new Dell GX240 PC.
I installed brand new Adaptec AHA-2930U Ultra SCSI PCI Card. I want to use it to control my External Sony CRX145S/XS CD-RW Drive.
Windows XP recognized new Adaptec SCSI Controller hardware and automatically installed an XP driver for it. This is now seen from the XP Device Manager under "SCSI and RAID Controllers" as "Adaptec AHA-2930CU PCI SCSI Controller". Device Properties General Tab shows Device Status as "This device is working properly." The Driver Tab shows:
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 7/1/2001
Driver Version: 5.1.2600.0Upon booting, the black PC screen that appears briefly lists the Adaptec SCSI Controller on the screen and even provides a Control-A exit for Set-up. The Sony CD-ROM Drive also appears to be detected shortly after this disappears during the boot process as its drive status light flashes and the drive makes a little bit of noise. So, it appears the Adaptec SCSI Controller and the Sony CD-RW Drive are talking to one another.
However, once Win XP is fully up and I then go into Windows Explorer I do not see a new drive letter that should appear for the external CD-ROM drive. For some reason, XP does not appear to be fully detecting the Sony CD-RW drive.
Does anyone have a clue as to why not?
I checked the XP Hardware Compatibility List and both the Adaptec SCSI Controller and the Sony Drive are supposed to be supported.
I've been to the Adaptec Web Site, and was able to download and save to my hard disk the Device Driver that XP uses with the same file name "AIC78XX". However, the Adaptec driver has a version of 6.0.2230.100 dated March 15, 2000; and as such appears to be a newer version than the Microsoft one that was auto-installed by XP.
I tried unsuccessfully to Update the Driver from my Hard Drive but it doesn't see it even when I specify the directory the file is in. Will putting just the driver file on a Floppy work?
The Sony Support Web Site for the CRX145S/XS CD-RW Drive states in its FAQ that a driver does not have to be installed in order to use the drive with XP. No specific PC software related to Drive Control came in its packaging other that the bundled burner and backup software.
Also, I know the drive works and that the SCSI Cable is good because both were working on an old Powermac system I had them on before I moved them to my new Dell PC.
Can anyone recommend a solution so I can get XP to detect the CD-RW drive like its supposed to?

try deleting your scsi and raid cotroller and reboot and when it asks for driver , select the one you downloaded.
what about your power supply and connections , check them too.
