ok i dont know why this happened but this morning when i tried to open my computer, windows xp would not start no matter what. it shows the screen where you have different options like 'start windows in safe mode' or 'use last know configuration' and stuff but when i select any one of the options the computer just automatically restarts and takes me back to that same screen.

can anyone help?

This article lists reasons why you have to do what it says, one is no SAFE-Mode.

i didnt do anything out of the ordinary yesterday. when i click on safe mode, it just show a list of files that pass to quick so i dont know what are the files. then, it just restarts. if i choose 'last know configuration', it goes to a blue screen but before i can see anything it restarts.

ok i can see some of the files that pass when i choose safe mode, they look something like this:

multi(0)disk/*something*/partition(0)/system/something.sys

once again it passes too quickly some of the things i described in that may not be accurate.

How to do a system repair.--Boot from the xp cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the xp updates. You MUST install at least SP1 and all the updates for security reasons. Unless you have a slipstream sp1 cd you will have to d/l sp1 and all subsequent updates. Be sure the firewall and A/V is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster. If you don't want SP2 go to autopatcher.com and d/l SP1 and subsequent updates.

Please post back within 24 hours or I will delete the post from my follow up list. Thanks. It would be a courtesy if you would post back and let us know if the fix worked or not.

Be sure in the bios that the first boot device is the cd and on the boot when it askes "do you want to boot from the cd" press enter. You have 5 seconds to do that.

I have this problem also.I am totally locked out of my XP CD ( SP1) It occured on my pc on 12/21 in the morning when i tried to log on. I have attempted several "repairs" using xp CD , and also tried safe mode. I comes up with win login screen but NO USER Icon to click on, Even though the "Repair" function seems to end up ok to completion. Also Ctl Alt Delete brings up my registered name but I never had a password, but it says the password is invalid. I tried Administrator with a blank password ( per HP ) and that does not work either. Could this be a worm, virus, bug, etc that is so far unknown? HP Compaq says they have never seen it before, Any help appreciated. P.S. I am on a borrowed PC so I may not be able to receive emails. I really need to save my data - it has all my work for 2004 out there . Question does a "fresh install" wipe out data ?

thx jd
