XP does not recognize secondary IDE

Hi Folks,
I recently upgraded from NT to XP. My bios can see the cd read device hanging off the secondary ide. XP does not see the secondary ide and hence the cd read device. I have reseated the cables, and I am suspecting that the problem is not reseating cables. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Can u read the cdrom via a Win98 startup disk dos prompt ??
Check device manager for any conflicts.
Try un-installing secondary IDE controller in Dev Manager and reboot to let XP find new hardware and re-install.
Hope this helps

It may seem obvious, but try flashing ur BIOS to the latest version. XP has some gay problems with old BIOSes.

Flashing the BIOS is not the answer, you did say the optical drive is seen in the BIOS.Since you have reseated the ide cable, try keef's suggestion if the drive works in dos then the problem is within windows.

98 sees it. I uninstalled the secondary ide and it reinstalled itself badly. Any more suggestions.

I fixed it. I removed both com device and the secondary ide, and this time XP figured it out.
