Are you using the HDD as a data drive (D:\) or as your system (C:\) drive? As well, what file system are you running on that HDD?

NTFS. i previously used the hard disk on my other computer running xp as well. I need to use the data in that disk onto my new xp machine. It does not contain any system / OS files only data .

I had the same exact problem. If you are using Roxio Goback on the slave drive, uninstall it. XP will then immediately recognize it - regardless of if either of the drives are formatted in NTFS or Fat32.

I have the same problem and I've located the hard drive in disk management. The drive is not assigned to a letter so how do I go about assigning a drive letter to that drive? I don't want to format my hard drive coz there is some important work in there. Please help. Thanks.
