OS: windows xp pro

Comment:

Trying to reinstall WindowsXP Pro on a computer that had missing Windows files and would not start. Booted from CD and formatted the entire drive, chose to reinstall windows. Everything goes ok until the first reboot, when it comes back on to go through all the setup I am only getting half of a display on the monitor, and everything is HUGE. So, one half screen is windows setup blue, other half is black with a white wiggling line going down the middle of that. Any ideas, I have reformatted twice and it is till doing it. Please, any help would be appreciated.

That sounds like a good idea.

And also if budget permits throw in some more ram it will make a huge difference to xp perfomance.

Also check your agp mapping allocation in the bios if its set at 128 reduce it down to about 64 or 32 this may be causing some of your problem also.

Good luck

It is only a 40gig HD that was not partitioned before, that is why I only reformatted, twice now. As for AGP, the video is on the MB, I have tried the whole process again but still a split blue/black screen. Any more ideas guys?

Oh good one Excal

Not sure what it could be !!!

The on board video sound bit suspect is it a new board or old one ?

Did you try installing the chipset and video drivers after loading the os to see if that makes any difference. The os may not have the appripriate base drivers do run the display correctly ( a long shot that one ) How old or how big is your monitor?

Check all your bios settings to make sure all is set as it should be and most important make sure that LBA is enabeld in the bios for the hard drive.

Perhaps, if you give us a list, brand and age of your components we may be able to get closer to the root of the problem.

I suspect a hradware or settings problem but need more info allong the lines i stated above.

regards

If you still need help , after trying Janos suggestions .

Partitioning > one partition is still a partition , here are some tools to help get the drive back to unpartitioned ( even if the drive is partitioned in NTFS )

You then use fdisk or your XP cd to start again .

==========================================

WIPE OUT
http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/index.html
Freeware .
WIPE OUT : as the name implies, this utility will absolutely WIPE your hard drive. For those
times when an industrial strength cleaner is needed to remove any pesky files Fdisk may have
left behind. A readme file is included in the zip file. WARNING...WIPE OUT will remove ALL data
from the Hard Drive.

DIRECTIONS

1- Unzip file
2- Copy WIPEOUT to a Win9x boot disk
3- Boot with Win9x disk
4- At the A:\> type "wipeout c: /nq /np" (no quotes)
/nq = no queries - you will not be asked if you are sure.
/np = no partitions - this will overwrite the MBR

Press Enter .

Now run fdisk to set up partitions .
When done , reboot & format .

=====================================

Delpart.exe From NT 3.51, this utility can delete extended NTFS,
Lilo, and just about any other type of partition .
DELPART is a DOS based utility that will remove NTFS partitions from
hard drives. FDISK is unable to remove some types of NTFS partitions.
DELPART can wipe clean a hard drive, then you can use FDISK to create
partitions normally.
