Comment:

Have allready tried the shell registry fix that has been mentioned elsewhere. Did not fix the problem. Have also ran McAfee, Spysweeper, Adaware, HiJackThis, etc.. As far as we can tell, the system is now clean from ads/spyware/viruses.

The problem now, no desktop. Wallpaper is there, no right click menu, no icons, no taskbar. If I ctrl-alt-del and use the file/run option and type in explorer, for a brief second explorer loads, the taskbar appears and then immediately explorer closes and nothing. Just the wallpaper.

Performed a repair installation using XP Home SP1 OEM. Followed by an install of SP2 using the taskmgr file/run to get it started. Still, no desktop.

Any ideas?

Are you having the problem of missing Taskbar and desktop icons if you log in as Administrator also?

Can you see Taskbar and desktop in Safe Mode?

Same problem in safe mode as admin, also same prob in normal mode under all four profiles.

When in safe mode, you get the prompt to click yes or no just before the desktop loads. Briefly see the taskbar for a split second and it disappears.

Whether in normal or safe mode, trying to force explorer to load, same thing. No error messages or crashes. Nothing in the event viewer pertaining to it. All services are set to default settings. When you try to load explorer using the run box, you see also see it pop into the list of services running and then a second later its gone again.

If the problem is not solved with one more attempt by using Taskbar Repair Tool Plus, my suggestion is Reformat & WinXP Reinstall to get rid of severe Registry corruption.

Would like too, but the customer refuses that option. Have to find a solution.

Yea... fixing to call the customer and tell them there isn't any other way. Maybe a parallel install of xp in a new folder. We do this sort of thing for a living here, normally I can figure it out. This one though, has me baffled. I would say 90% of our business for the last 18 months has been nothing but adware and spyware removal so I am pretty familiar with whats out there and the tools needed to help. But this one has me stumped lol.

Mount his/her HD as slave in a clean pc (i mean another pc without any trouble and with Built-in CD-RW), then backup all his/her documents and needed files, finally re-format his/her HD and re-install Win XP again. I also have customer and this fix many troubles and saves many time. Best Luck.

Work Around Add windows explorer shorth cut to the all useres start up folder. This will bring back desktop and task bar but will also open windows explorer every time you log in.
