When I power up, I get the welcome screen, but the desktop often comes up blank. When it doesn't, some system tray icons are missing (AVG and sound mixer). If I log off and back on, the desktop comes up correctly. If I use task manager to shut down from a blank desktop, I get explorer.exe not responding.
I used to have Nvidia desktop manager installed, but it seems to have gone missing and I can't remember how I got it there in the first place. I wonder if this might have something to do with the problem, but don't want to make things worse by blind tinkering.

Nvidias desktop manager might be causing your problems if it wasn't uninstalled correctly to fix just download the drivers from their site agian.

go to the website nvidia and download the program and reinstall it. if not then you might have to do a fresh install to correct this problem. You might want to download ad-aware se and get norton for viruses.

Thanks for the replies. I've re-installed the NVidia graphics software, which includes desktop manager, and the problem persists. HT shows nothing, and a Panda scan comes up with a couple of low-risk cookies which constantly re-appear.
How much grief will an XP install cause me?
