Hi,
My XP is constantly and consistently crashing whenever I view folders that contain videos or even MS Word document that has images.
It use to just reboot, and then when it was done reloading it would tell me my video card caused the problem.
After removing it's ability to automatically reboot itself, I got the Blue Screen of death which said the nv4.sys file was stuck in an infinite loop.
I know other people are getting this problem. Has anyone found a solution?
Thanks!

Hi Menashe.

Are you using the XP drivers from the XP CD or did you download and install the XP drivers from your card's manufacturer?

In my case, I installed a new ATI Radeon card.

The drivers included on the XP CD caused a reboot and blue screen anytime I clicked on a folder on my desktop with a message that my video driver was at fault.

I reinstalled my old card and drivers, went to ATI's site, downloaded their XP drivers (which took me an hour), took out my old card, put in the new card and drivers, and now everything is working great.

If you're using Microsoft's XP drivers try installing the manufacturer's XP drivers.

If you are using the manufacturer's drivers, see if Microsoft's will work better for you until the manufacturer can fix theirs.

A lot of the newly released XP drivers will have bugs in them.

The manufacturers will need time to work on them so keep checking their websites for updates.

Take care,

Callisto

Thanks for the response.
Actually I've tried both XP's driver and the new manufacturer's driver, and get the same error either way.
Sucks, huh?

I had the same problem for 2 weeks. Went to Viatech.com (if you have a via chipset, which most do) and downloaded the updated agp410 drivers. Everything is running great now. P.S. I first tried their 4in1 driver with no luck. Each driver loaded individually was the trick for me. Give a try and let me know how it worked

It seems, like I finally got it fixed....I definitely found enough websites with hints and fixes:

Very helpful before trying to fix it, is the NVIDIA Driver de-installer:

http://www.btinternet.com/~bobruck/download.html

It gives you a clean slate before trying the fixes.

Major issue is definitely the shared IRQ problem. XP slappes all your cards on the same IRQ, and the GeForce just can't handle that.
In order to fix that, deactivate ACPI and Plug and Play (PnP) in your BIOS, install XP clean with all inbox drivers. Make sure, that the GeForce has it's own IRQ (Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - System - Hardware - Device Manager: Check IRQ under Resources Tab. Check all other Devices the same way, and make sure, none is using the same IRQ!)
Then install the newest NVIDIA Driver. I use 21.83 and it works just fine.

Other websites with excellent info and detailed step by step solutions:

http://www.geforcefaq.com (Excellent!!!)
http://www.teamanarchy.com/writeups.php?idx=986866324 (AMD Athlon specific!)

I wish you all good luck!

(My System: AMD 1.4, 512 MB, Biostar M7MIA, GeForce 64MB MX400, Windows XP)
