XP - Class installer denied request

This is the error when installing the Lexmark X73, which works fine when this new hardware wizard comes up but has to be canceled when the computer is restarted. " Can not install this hardware. There was a problem installing the software for Lexmark scanner. An error occurec during the installation of the device. The class installer has denied the request to isntall or upgrade this device. Click finish to close the wizard." Anyone seen this on something else? Microsoft has nothing about any part of this error in their database.
