Is it an IDE/SCSI drive? Try removing the drive and all traces of any drivers and software for it, power up, then down again. reinstall the cd, that may do it.(works in 98) I take it you have set the correct CS/SL/MA setting on the CD for IDE drives or the correct scsi ID ?

I had the same problem after uninstalling Roxio's Direct CD which isn't supported in Windows XP. I tried the other solutions mentioned but they didn't work. I found the solution at microsoft.com's search knowledge database, article Q314060. It requires a slight alteration of the registry files and a reboot. Make sure you back up registry file first! This solved the problem immediately. By the way, did you uninstall Direct CD?
