Hi, there.
I have a Prolink 1456VE V.90 56 Kbps External Modem (Rockwell Chipset)attached to my serial port. The Prolink website doesn't have XP drivers, so I'm using NT 4.0 drivers. Everything works fine, except that when I start my PC I have to remember to turn on my modem FIRST then my PC. If I don't do that, XP doesn't detect my modem (No Modem in the device manager list, it's just gone). To get my modem back, in device manager-communications port (COM1)I have to run "scan for hardware changes". Then XP fill find the modem.
It's no big deal, but it's annoying.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I believe this is the way Windows
XP works. I also believe it is the
same in Windows 2000. I've always had
to turn my external modem on first
before I booted my computer. A
workaround would probably be to get
an internal modem if possible. This
would get power from the computer
when it is turned on.

Why not just leave the modem on all the time?Thats what i done (3COM US Robotics 56k Ext) before I got cable and that worked fine for me. They use very little power and I can see no other problems.

Thanks for the responses guys. I always thought that computing.net was the best place to ask questions. Oh well, I guess I'm leaving my modem on all the time now..
