It seems as though at least 3 times a day I have to open task manager and end task explorer.exe and restart it by going to the application tab and pressing new task and then browsing to c:\windows\ . This did not happen in build 2526. Everything other than explorer runs fine in the backgroud, but this lockup keeps me from doing anything, until I follow the steps above.. Has anyone else had this issue? anyone have a fix? thanks in advance..

Yeah ... I'm also having this problem with Xp build 2600 ...
Sometimes it simply crashes and sometimes all of my three CD-Drives (attached to Promise Controller and Tekram SCSI Controller) can't read CDs anymore ... If I check the properties tab of the drive I can see the various tracks on the CD, but explorer doesn't show the files. Browsing the HDs (on Promise) works all the time ...

Any Hints ???

Wow, this seems to be a problem Microsoft needs to fix, I too have had these problems along with my explorer.exe crashing quiet frequently. I'm ready to format and start from scratch. XP isn't suppost to be like this!!

I'm having the same problem too. Explorer will hang while i'm browsing my drives, or occaisionally IE will also do the same thing, stopping everything from working - start menu, desktop shortcuts, etc - though i've noticed if i leave my pc after a few minutes i get control of my system again.
I formatted and reinstalled xp but it didn't fix it. Maybe it's because of poor native drivers for ide controllers?
If anyone has any ideas please post them! Seems like this could become an issue with quite a few people as XP gets used more.

Here's a possible fix!

I had my explorer.exe restarting itself "every other" time I clicked on either My Computer, My Documents, or Control Panel, like clock work. -- either saying "...serious error...send/don't send.." or working perfectly.

Also in my case, IIS was inaccessible from Admin Tools & Add/Remove, but FINALLY got rid of it!

I did these steps when it fixed itself, so I'm not sure exactly which one did it.

1. Renamed MDM.exe (I was too afraid to delete it). It was in the System32 dir.

2. Removed reference to MDM.exe from Windows\Prefetch dir.

3. Deleted all files from Temp Internet Files dir.

4. Deleted all from Windows\Temp dir.

If someone narrows it down, please post the exact fix.

I got Explorer crashing all the time when I used the "Find" Function. I had Office XP installed, and seeing the "Event Viewer", I detect the error in "olkfstub.dll": The Outlook Find Extension. To get rid of the problem, delete the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FindExtensions\Static\OutlookFind\

I HAD the same problem. Each time I browsed a bit in my explorer my computer froze (CPU usage 100%). I am quite sure that it has something to do with media files such as mp3 and divx files. I solved it by:
1) uninstalled codecs
2) unassociate media files with media player
3) click in explorer on "view" in toolbar and change view "details" I unchecked all options besides Name;Size;Date;Changed.
( I am unsing a dutch version of XP build 2600, therefore the settings can have a somewhat different name)

Try uninstalling Norton Cleansweep if you have it loaded and reboot your machine. That was the problem for me. I hope it works for you poeple too.

My explorer keeps crashing consistently in the "My Pictures" folder. Clicking on a folder with pictures will usually crash explorer at the 4th or 5th opening of a folder. Sometimes it brings up an error message and other times it just vanishes from the screen!!!
HELP!!!
