Subject: XP Boot-up problemOS: Windowx XP SP2CPU/Ram: 512 RAM |
Comment: Hi. I'm having a problem booting up a friend's computer. It gets to the screen with the moving blue line indicating that it's booting but after a while it just reboots itself without ever getting past the boot-up screen. It seems to boot up fine in safe mode. From safe mode I tried going into MSCONFIG and selected diagnostic start up but I get the same thing trying to boot normally after that. Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated. Jason.

Reply: (edit)My guess is a virus or some issue with the items listed in msconfig. Select one at a time or boot to safe mode and see event viewer. Consider also restore point. I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

Reply: (edit)This sounds to me like a driver problem. Boot to safe mode, go to the Control Panel, double click System, then click the Hardware Tab, then click Device Manager. In Device Manager, look for any yellow exclamation points beside any device. If you see one, right click the device(s) and click Uninstall. Click OK on the confirmation window. Don't reboot till you've uninstalled all of them. Jesus can change your life for the better!

Reply: (edit)Well I tried scanning with AVG and it didn't come up with anything. She seems to have her Restore Points turned off so that's out. I went and checked the device manager and I did find something with a yellow exclamation. I uninstalled it and tried rebooting normally but it just did the same thing. It turns out that the thing with the yellow exclamation was a root hub. It reinstalled the root hub fine when I rebooted in safe mode but still wont boot unless in safe mode. I also noticed the computer will freeze during the boot-up sometimes instead of rebooting itself. I don't know if that really matters or not but I figured I would mention just in case.

Reply: (edit)Ok since a driver problem is eliminated, it *could* be a hardware problem. Physically remove all USB Devices, and PCI Cards and boot with the mouse keyboard and video. It could be that something connected to the computer is bad, causing those problems. This is all a shot in the dark, because I've never really seen your situation before. Did the person who owns the computer do anything such as install a program or add some hardware before the problem occur? Jesus can change your life for the better!

Reply: (edit)RWD1996 you were on the money regarding the pci cards. I opened the computer and found the cards to be extremely dusty. I pulled the cards and air dusted them and that fixed the problem. Thanks for your help!
