After Win XP loading splash screen, I'm left with a black screen w/mouse pointer active. PC does not lock up. Only changes made were Norton AV definition update then reboot. Safe mode/restore point have same results as normal boot.

Well, I would do a couple of silly things frist, like plug my monitor in to a different computer and see if it does anything, then I would plug my computer into a different monitor and see if that does anything. Could be your video card.

Also you need to attempt to Boot your System up in the Safe Mode. Do this by pressing F-8 at start up until you get a screen that had a few choices. The one you want is Support with wommand Prompt.

Then go into you computer and Run the Operation Systems Scan Disk and check for any errors(also have it check all sectors, might take a bit longer but will be a better scan for any problems).

Hope this helps

Jack

Thanks in Advance

Hi jetdriver, I found the same issue. Did this happen a few days ago? My client's computer did this January 2. I wonder if this is viral.

Madam, although it is possible the video driver is corrupt it is not likely and it is not a video card issue because jetdriver said he can see the mouse pointer. If it were video he would not see the pointer.

Jack58, jetdriver already stated that safe mode gives the same results.

This looks viral.

we've got 3 Win XP Home systems on our bench right now with the same problem. We've been running chkdsk from the recovery console, errors are found. Some we've been able to boot up to after that others require clean install. HD and mem tests show no problems. I think it's more than coincidence.....any new information, please post...i agree...appears to be a virus or spyware

Having the same issue on a HP Pavillion 4970 .. tried everything but re-formatting.

I've taken out cards, tried different vid cards, memory, safe mode, chkdsk, restore point .. nothing .. still boots to blackscreen pointer.

Anyone have any luck fixing this?

Had exact problem on XP system with no service packs installed: including safe mode. Repair install had no effect as others have found. Boot CD and virus checker found a few trojans but fixing did not cure the problem. Search of the Windows directory suggests that last installs (and therefore probable source of problem) was an auto update of several hotfixes and an IE update.
SOLUTION THAT WORKED: create a Slipstreamed XP install disk incorporating SP2 and repeat the repair install.
If you don't understand 'slipstream', see excellent guide at www.winsupersite.com (technology showcase pages).
