I have Windows XP Profession edition when I try to boot I get the hp screen and then I get a blank screen with no cursor. The only way for me to boot into xp is if i boot from the cd by pressing F1. I got a message before that which said "Warning: Please back up the hard disk and replace the hard disk" "Hard drive failure may be imminient." I tried reformatting but it didnt help but the message disappeared. Is there anyway for me to boot normally?

Go here for the drive fitness program. Your machine is trying to tell you the hard drive is failing. Backup ASAP, then trouble shoot. http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

It sounds like the hardware monitoring is enabled within the bios.

It is telling you your hard drive is or may be damaged, and is going to fail.

I would suggest you listen to it.

Before your drive fails totaly remove it, get another drive, hook it up and reload the OS.

Than attach the old drive as a slave on the seconadry ide cable and copy across all the data that you need. I presume that the hard drive was partitioned ??

IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIX IT

I would heed the warning and back up anything you don't want to lose immediately.
You can go to the hard drive mfr. website and download a diagnostic program to check the drive out completely before you decide whether replace it or not.
