Comment:

My Compaq Presario 730US laptop came with XP Home pre-installed. worked fine for a couple of months. Now, the system doesn't boot. I have the Compaq restore disks but do not want to lose my data. readntfs utility shows me the contents of the hard disk(does not show all, why?) but how and where do I copy the data ? will using a external CD-RW help?
Trying to install Windows 2000 (thinking that I could access the NTFS Hard disk)doesn't work. Trying to install another copy of XP causes the system to shut off!
Help!

Thanks.

Hold down the F8 key while booting. That should get you into a menu. Select "Last Known Good Configuration". It has saved me a couple of times when I've messed something up.
