Hi All

I need ideas.

I had to go and look at a pc today that is having a problem.

When he starts it for the first time it usually takes 2-5 times to get the pc started,

It starts up goes through post then the screen goes black, this is where it either

freezes or

xp logo comes up screen goes black no sgnal appears then desktop appears

I need to get it starting up properly.

Ccleaner etc have all been run, spyware and AV software all been run.

Thanks for looking

Columbo

Update :

Quick question, After the XP logo dissappears the monitor says no signal then comes back on and the desktop comes up? why does the monitor lose connection everytime and then come back on, It never used to do this?

Also the CPU temp of this system always seems to be 77-78 degrees, it is a P4 3ghz 1gbRam is this normal as when I looked inside the system it was pretty clear and the fans seem to be running ok?

I need to find out why it keeps freezing on startup!!

Thanks

Columbo

Thanks

No, that's quite high, especially if it's the idle temp. Either the temp reading is in error, or the heatsink wasn't installed properly. My guess is the latter. Remove the HSF, clean it, then reinstall it with a fresh layer of thermal paste. A dab about the size of a BB or grain of rice is all that's needed. Find the CPU on this list & read the instructions:

Other than that, you *may* have a failing power supply.

Would the heat issue be responsible for the random freezing on bootup??

Thanks
