XP ATE MY MODEM!!!!!

i'm using 5.1.2600 Build 2600 WinXP and Thundercom ext. modem.
If I didnt turn on the modem when I start my comp, XP cant detect my modem and it says it's not there. It'll be only there if I turn on the comp and modem together. anyone got any idea how to solve this thing?
