XP asking for windows product activation

November 20, 2011 at 12:28:46
Specs: Windows XP
I activated my windows nearly two years ago and have been using my computer with no issues. It just crashed and when it started it is asking for windows product activation. i followed the process (after repeatedly re-starting my computer in the hope it would just go away) and it would not connect to the internet so i rang the support number and typed in the code and was told it was invalid. No humans on the end of the line so don't know what to do.

Your question raises the issue of whether you had a genuine copy in the first instance. For instance did it come with the computer, did you buy it (in which case you have a genuine problem). There are Microsoft numbers which are attended and you should access their home page to establish this. I am not based in the US but I would start with the phone book or the Internet.

Thanks Guys
My version was real, got it with the comp and no previous issues. I am not prompted to activate every time i start the computer. I did find a solution though (for those in the future)

Start Comp in safe mode by pressing F8 during start up. Go to run, cmd prompt box. Type in rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk

Then restart computer.

I got this solution from : http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...

That should only work for 30 days so I guess we will see you in a few weeks.

As it costs 70euro to contact microsoft and the original software key is worn away on my computer it seems my only option is to purchase a new version. So far no soltions have worked completely.
