XP arranges files randomly

I've experienced a very confusing 'error' lately: When I opens 'explorer.exe', 'My Documents' or search for a file inside another application the file order is random. Files beginning with A could be in the middle of the listing and even between two folders. I.e. from the top I can have this: image.jpg website.html VirtualDJ.xml Programbackup (folder) image2.bmp Nero playlists (folder)
As you see there is no alphabetical order. (btw. there's no size or date order either) It's absolutely random. That's really a problem when I try t find one among hundreds of files and folders. I can sort them by klicking the 'Show' button and put them in oorder manually but this is r-e-a-l-l-y irritating. Any ideas?

In Explorer click on e.g. drive C and sort the files as you like. Then, in Explorer, go to extras / folder options / display, and then click on the left button that says something like "for all folders". I don't know the exact name, because I'm using a german windows.

While in a folder, Click on the box that says name. If reversed order click again. Now go to Tools> folder options> View> Apply to all folders.

I haven't thought of that solution at all since I've actually done that several times. First when I reinstalled XP (to get my own configuration), then twice when I added new columns. I guess I didn't have the order arranged alphabetically when I did that. Thanks guys. Now it seems to work fine.
