xp and win7 peer to peer networking with usb

Specs: Windows XP
Am trying to set up peer to peer network between two machines; one is running XP and the other is Windows 7. Computers are connected by a regular usb cable; need to now how to set up windows so the machines can communicat.

I stand to be corrected but I'm fairly certain you cannot use a 'regular' USB cable to network computers together. I also seem to remember being told once that using an A/A cable can cause damage to the USB ports - that's why printers etc. use A/B cables. There are USB cables with a bit of circuitry in the middle that can do the job, or if both computers have a network card then you can use those.
