Subject: XP and Shutdown (auto turn off)

Comment: Hi all, here's my problem. Before when I use shut down, my computer would turn itself off, now after I had to reinstall XP after another motherboard replacement (my third one since upgrading to MSucksWinXP, for some reason, i've fried 2 motherboards in less than 5 months) when I hit shutdown, it goes to the screen, it is now safe to turn off your computer. How do I set it back where it just turns the computer off itself so I don't have to hit the button?

Reply: (edit)i would check your bios to make sure power management is not disabled. if that's it your lucky. otherwise power management in windows is hosed. you can't reinstall it through add new hardware anymore in xp. could be a setting in the registry, but i couldn't find anything in technet. i would reload it instead of troubleshooting.

Reply: (edit)Some computers are able to turn themselves off after you click Shut Down, just as if you turned off their power switch. if your computer has never turned itseft off, you probably can't get it to do so now because the computer is not designed for this feature. But if your computer has turned itself off in the past, the computer has probably had this capability deactivated. To resote automatic shutdown: Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->Power Options-> and look for an option that turns on Advanced Power Management (APM). Hope this helps. Bye

Reply: (edit)I just outlined a topic like this on our message board. It had to do with a user using a remote shutdown tool, but they were running into the same issue. http://www.2000trainers.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=669

Reply: (edit)This is actually for Win2k Pro. Go to Start/settings/control Panel/Power Options. Choose the "APM" tab and check the box next to "Enable Advanced Power Management Support". That worked on my machines.

Reply: (edit)I suggest anyone having problems takes a look at: www.budja.com/shutdown/ It gives you the opportunity to add icons for shutdown and restart and the shutdown does just that.
