Thanks to these forums I took my time and got a hassle-free XP Home Edition install on my Compaq 5900z (whew ... dodged a bullet.)
No DVD player, and Windows Media Player won't play DVDS. Again ... posts here let me know that in advance. So I'm trying out PowerDVD XP, and it works great! I'm quite certain I'll drop the $50 for it if I can get an answer to one bug:
No sound.
Picture's great, all the other features are great ...
But no sound.
Latest Creative drivers, everything's turned on behind the scenes etc., etc.
But no sound.
Any ideas or fixes? Folks here helped make my XP install a three-hour affair, rather than an entire weekend. I hope someone can do that again.
Thanks for whatever help you can provide.
Patrick

Don't overlook the obvious. There is a volume control on the somewhat overly complex PDVD interface. If I remember correctly the program starts with the volume at 0. Check the mute as well.

Patrick,
You may also want to check out the configurations of PDVD, theres a bunch of different setup options for audio and such.
