I currently work on a network that has a Windows NT 4.o
server. All of the workstations we currently have are
Windows 98. We are now starting to use Laptops that came
with Windows XP. I set them up to login to the domain but
if I disconnect them from the network and then try to
login it takes about 2 minutes before the desktop appears.
The login screen shows that I am trying to login to the
domain even when I am not physically connected to the
domain. If I change the login to login locally I get a
differnt desktop and thats something I don't want to
happen so if I tell the laptop to login to the domain even
when I am not connected to the network I get the desktop I
want but it just takes a couple of minutes to login. Is
there a setting I can try to reduce the time or can I tell
the laptop to login to the local account and still connect
to the network domain.Thanks. Any help is greatly appreciated.

When you log into the domain you are logging in with a different account than if you log into the local machine. Therefore, you get a different desktop. That is expected behavior. There is not much you can do about that. If you tell it you want to log into the domain, then it will try to find a domain controller and that is where the delay is coming from.
There isn't much you can do if you want that domain account profile. Even if you copy the domain profile to the local account, the first time you change something in the domain account, it will not be copied to the other profile and they will be out of sync again.
