XP and Cd-rom/writer problem

hello
i have a cd-rom and cd writer installed. i am using build 2600. Both work after a boot, but later at any given time...no one will work, the burner reads blank for no matter which kind of cd i put in...the cd rom won't reconize a cd at all. Also at this time i can put a full cd-rw in the burner, it think its blank, i can still erase it, burn it and still thinks its a blank cd...i have to re-boot to regain control of both devices again.
And the burn did work.

i have a dell dimension 8100, nec-7800a cd-rw, and creative labs 52x cd-rom.

i am using adaptec easy creater 5.02
Nero 5.5
clone cd 3

Does anyone have any ideas because i've tried everything....i have two harddrives on the primary ide and both cd-roms on the secondary ide.

I've removed drivers and re-installed them, changed the configuration in the computer. What i've just done, was changed both cd-rom drives from DMA to PIO...so far they are still working without a reboot but that would be too easy a fix.

I'm starting to think that i might have a motherboard problem. I've just bought this computer but never noticed the problem with windows me.

Help would be appreciated.

I'm having the very same problem with Windows XP Build 2600.
But I don't need to reboot to solve the problem ... just log off and log on ... it works again ...
I'm using a clean install of XP, but as you I installed Nero 5.5.2.4.
My drives are connected to different controllers ... Promise UDMA 100 and Tekram SCSI ... but the problem affects ALL CD-drives (harddiscs on Promise work fine)

Maybe Nero causes this problems ...
Please answer if you found a solution ...

try installing the cdrom aspi drivers.

Try this and read the instructions first.

i never tried loggin off and on though.

i decided to re-do a clean install, i then removed autorun, and removed DMA again to PIO for the secondary ide devices, both cd-roms. So far that has seemed to fix the burner, could be just conicidence,or just hasn't happened yet. but the regular cd-rom still eventually stops reading any disks.

another problem though, before the install, i had adaptec 5 working properly, now it will install but will not run, i get an error when starting the program....i've uninstalled it and re-installed and same thing...i tried adaptec 4 and it works.
what's up with this?

nero works fine when a disk is in the cd-rom, but when there is no disk in the burner, when scrolling through the different types, ie video disk, iso disk, etc....it crashes.

i've tried installing the aspi drivers but it says i don't have adaptec installed, i have version 4 installed.

EZ CD Creator and Nero do not like to share the same working environment! EZ likes to have the whole thing to itself. It's one or the other boys :) I am running EZ with 2600 RTM and have no problems with it.

I am running 2600 and am having a very similar problem to Dan. I have 2 HDs on the primary IDE. Samsung DVD is master on secondary IDE, Liteon 16x burner is slave on secondary IDE. I have only installed Easy CD 5.02 for burning software so far. DVD drive will not read any disk in windows, but I can boot with the XP CD with it, and it works fine in Safe mode. I disabled UDMA on secondary IDE, but using PIO seems to have no effect. Dan, were you using auto, or a manual mode for PIO?

On a strange note, if I walk through the "update driver" wizard for the DVD drive, the drive will come back until next reboot.

I attempted the aspi driver updated mentioned above, with no success.

A second issue that may be related: I get a BSOD on shut down or restart with the message “IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL”. I could not see this message until I unchecked the “automatically restart” checkbox under “system failure”. Before I did this the machine would restart when I would try to turn it off.

Other info: MB is Shuttle AK31, CPU athlon, 1.4ghz, 1gb of Micron 266 DDR ram, gforce 2 pro video card.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. (besides re-install everything.) :o)

I guess it didn't work, still the same problems

I need Nero and adaptec for different
reasons so i would like to have them both.

I am seriously thinking about going back to windows me and its a shame because XP is cool.

If anybody figures this out let me know.

In addition to my post (response 1) :

Nero ist the only burning software I installed. So no problems with EZ Cd-Creator possible.
When the described error occurs, explorer shows no folders/files of the cd in the drive. It seems as a blank has been put in. This is happening to all 3 cd-drives (SCSI burner on Tekram-SCSI Adapter, Pioneer DVD as primary master on IDE and Ricoh burner on Promise UDMA100-Controller).
But when I right-click on my cd-drive and choose the properties tab, I see an extra-option added by Nero. This window shows me the various iso tracks on my cd ... WORKING ... but explorer shows nothing !!!
This extra-tab (I think) is added by Nero by using a special filter driver accessing the cd-drives ... maybe this is the source of all the troubles ....
When I log off (error occured before), windows xp tells me SOMETIMES (!!) that explorer is not responding and closes this task .... log on and all is fine again ...

Did someone notice this error without having installed Nero ???

Ok, I feel stupid... I uninstalled Easy CD creator and everyting works fine now. Apparently it is Direct CD that caused all the problems on Easy CD 5.02. I did a custom install, and put only Creator on. So far, so good....

For those that use Nero, if you uninstall it, do the drives come back? Just curious.

in response to the nero post....that is exactly what is happening here...there is an extra tab there put by nero and in that tab it shows the iso tracks....but file manager shows cd as blank.

could it be nero all along that is causing this??

i just read the following at the bottom concerning our problem....removing the xp built in writer part...can someone try to confirm because i'm already back to windows me..............

here.........

No you don't need to do it to get Nero 5.5x to work. In my case some time
back when I did this there was a problem with the burnt CD showing as blank
in Explorer until the next boot. I disabled it and the problem seemed to go
away but to be honest I moved onto other things and never went back to try
and reproduce the problem. After trying it a couple of times for curiosity I
went with Nero and having it disabled is no problem for me.
I also removed Nerocd2k.sys from \windows\system32\drivers after having some
problems with standby which again seemed to help but as yet I haven't had
time to go back and test the theory.

Hi.

I also haved similar problems. I haved reinstaled XP 5 times and now they working ok. One time i haved problem that it cashed autorun.ini file from cd, and after I replaced cd with new one CP wanted to start old autorun.ini file. That happened after clean install (i have not instaled anything). Also It reported while instaling Office 2k that office1.cab file is missing. I solved that by copying office to HD and runing install from HD.
Also when some new hardware was found and xp requested XP cd, it reported me that its not original cd.
One time some problems was fixed after instaling Nero 5335. One time when I puted my CD recorder on another IDE channel.

Now I have reinstaled for 5th time, and I have disabled CD recording in CD properties. Concurently I have no problems for 1 day, but Im afraid to install office or nero hehe ...

I am having some problems with the cd and cdrw drives...

I clean installed windows xp build 2600

and everything was working fine and dandy, I have 2 cd drives. one generic 52x cdrom and one hp cd-writer 9500 burner.

I didn't try to burn anything and I didn't install any burning software and both drives showed up.

then I installed nero and restarted and both drives were still detected. when I opened nero, it said I didn't have any recorders installed. so I installed the software for my burner and restarted and I think it was then that it gave me an error message:
"CD recording software will cause windows to become unstable. windows has prevented these drivers from loading"
at which time both of my cd drives are disabled.

I have uninstalled all the software and reinstalled windows xp and it still gives me this error, I don't know what to do.

Nero 5.something installed here

THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED WITH W2K SERVER AS WELL.

and I started getting this after I exchanged my good old sound Blaster AWE64 for a Live! value.

also get a "the file mediadet.exe is missing or incorrect version" error running Creative Play Center.

just did the registry fix proposed by microsoft, lets hope it works. For their own sake, that is.

It seems quite strange what I'm gonna tell you guys, but is true!I used to have this problem and I found out that, for some reason, 2 Cd-ROM drives could not be in the same IDE.I then switched both. One was "SLAVE" in IDE1, and the other was "MASTER" it IDE2.No matter how many drives may exist in your computer, keep it that way, and guess what...I even received a message from Easy cd creator software telling me It would be better not to set 2 CD-ROM drives on the same IDE. Of course Windows XP can handle that in a different manner, for it has more control over IRQ's and stuff. Hope that works !
