Hi all.

Up until now I have had my "Update" set to notify me and I will select when to update.

I am thinking of setting this to Automatic updating but I have one concern that I hope someone can advise from experience or inside knowledge preferably.

I do not mind Windows updates but as yet, I do not want to install SP3 as it appears to me to be still too "buggy".

My question, if I set the settings to Automatic, will SP3 then automatically be installed without my knowledge, or do I physically have to install SP3 when the time is right?

Regards

If you set it to auto, then any updates that are available for your computer that have yet to be installed will be downloaded and installed. Whether they are needed or not!!!!

There are some patches(registry fixes that will block certain downloads like IE7 and they will all ways show as failed to install.

or

you can go to windows update and select custom for installing and wait to see what it has to show you...click on the expansion "+" box in front of each update and it will show an opt out choice for that update and it will not be shown for updating any more but you will get notices that you are hiding important updates from time to time.

The best thing is to let it notify you of any updates but let you choose when to download and install. That way you can see what it is trying to install...This is exactly what I do....that way I can wait for a week or so to see if there are any complaints of/for the update....that way I can stop it from downloading and installing and wrecking my computer!

I am presently on a corporate PC so can not check but I believe you can set the auto-updates to Critcal updates only and since SP3 is not critical at this time it will not download or install.

I have my personal XP Pro PC set to notify and it has not offered SP3 yet.

Thanks Brian.

Now that you mention it, I do not think I have been advised yet either, but I will be vigilant.

Janset - If you really hates to wake up one morning to find that XP SP3 has been installed on your PC, download & install XP SP3 blocker tool at the link below. The blocker tool is valid for 12 months following general availability of XP SP3 (December 6, 2007).

Good luck. BTW of all the PCs I have installed XP SP3, none have yet experienced problems of any kind (knock on wood).

Hi XpUser

Good bit of info thank in all regards. I don't think I will need to go as far as downloading the tool just yet but will keep it in mind. For the moment I will stay with 'Notify Me but don't install option'.
