I am also having problems with multiple monitors with Windows 2000 drivers. Originally I assumed it was a bug of some kind, which it might be, I dont know. Anyway a different problem of mine was solved by updating my motherboard drivers, so you may want to try that.

Problems also,

XP build 2600RTM
1.AGP ATI Xpert128 (works)
2.PCI S3 Verge (driver wont install code 10)
Abit BX6r2 MB
(*thks David for the MB reminder)
All worked fine on ME.

Two things to try still:
1.Looking for a better driver for the older S3, but the XP drivers should be good, and it did recognize the Verge...
2. Install the secondary card & monitor first with the AGP removed. Then after seccessful install, plug in the AGP. Bios
set to recognize AGP as primary (no snoop).
WinXP should detect and install the new card and after reboot, it should be primary.

Check back later...

To: Ringer, for 4 cards, maybe try installing in reverse?

Older S3 and ATI cards are only supported as primary VGA devices in XP

The work around is make the older card your primary in bios ... then you can change the settings software side. If you have multiple older cards however (like i do) ... though beans.

I am running into a problem with XP on a laptop running to an external display and the lcd. It recognizes both fine, displays both fine, problem being, I can't switch display I am using, it only displays on both. Not just that it wont display digital video on the external display. This stinks for two reasons, normally, when I running the external monitors I can switch the display to a much greater resolution, as well as it is a much better monitor than the poor old lcd on my laptop. Has anyone run into this? This has worked on every version of windows (9x,2k,and beta releases of xp) until this final release. Microsoft states that the hardware is does not support this, which I have proven wrong with every other OS.

I am running

FOSA Extreme 8900 Laptop
PIII 700
512MB pc100 memory
2 @ 30GB Hard Disk Drives
It's running the ATI LT Pro video chipset w/the video input (for capture) and video output.
It's the Intel BX Chipset
WinXP 2600RTM

Any Ideas?

I had the same problem with an ATI Radeon 64Mb and an old PCI RAGE 3D, to fix it, set it to boot from PCI in the bios, that's worked for me, I don't know about 4 monitors, this is only with 2, I had another question if anyone can help, with this dual monitor setup I'm trying to watch a movie of any format, DVD, VCD, AVI, or whatever but the only way to full screen on the secondary display is to make it the primary. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a program that lets you play video files full screen on a secondary display.

Kalidor got it spot on!
Thanks for the advice - select the old PCI as primary in the bios and multiple monitors works a treat in XP home.

Thanks again Kalidor.

I'm having the same problem with my system. How do I select my PCI card as primary in BIOS? I'm assuming this is easy to do, just need some instructions.

Thanks

Matt, regarding your question about multi-monitor video players - there's a great one (IMHO) called Zoom Player. Its learning curve for the advanced options is pretty steep, but if you're lucky, you might be able to just move the window over to the monitor you want it to display on and hit Alt+Enter. If that doesn't work (like, the video is too big or too small for the screen, when you're running your displays at different resolutions), you'll have to fumble with the "zoom presets," which you can cycle through by just hitting the numbers 1-0. Hope this helps!

Same problem here, older video cards. I think this tiny number of video cards that do dual view is part of a big plot of MS's to make money or do something underhanded. Why would win98 support more video cards for dual display than winXP? I am not sure what, could be lots of things. Anyway, I hope someone tells us how to get around this quick.

Bob, you say Win 98 will do dual view with most video cards?

thanks all,
psol
