Solved XP Add Remove Program shows unknown HP installations

June 28, 2013 at 00:21:59
Specs: Windows XP
I have a Dell desk top computer about 10 years old. I noticed in the Add/Remove in my control panel that there are several download installations from HP that I didn't add. Why would I have HP on a Dell computer? Would it hurt anything if I uninstall all these HP downloads if they are not being used?

Before you uninstall anything you might want to check in MSCONFIG--STARTUP to see if anything from HP is running and then decide if you need it. I seem to recall some HP software/drivers that are used by other systems as well.

But if it's just the updates, online store and solutions center then yeah, that's just BS and can be removed.

Depends upon whether you have any HP peripherals - a printer is most likely.

I have a HP computer which I bought in 2009 but the hard drive went out on it about a week ago. I did have a HP printer with it. However, it too stopped printing about 2 years ago and I was only using it to scan. But it was never connected to this Dell. I have nothing HP connected to this Dell, nor have I ever had. That's what makes me wonder why I have all these HP installations. There's an HP update, an HP online store, an HP solution center, and several others all installed here on this Dell which I never put on it. I've asked friends of mine if they have ever heard of such a thing, and no one has, they all think it's as perculiar as I do.

If you don't use the programs, just uninstall them. :)

Jennifer is spot on but it does seem odd that you have all that HP stuff. As you rightly say, they are the sort of things you usually come with an HP computer. Even on an HP computer I've not found them particularly useful.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Thanks Derek, your reply seems to be the best one I've gotten so far. All this HP stuff doesn't really pose a problem for me, I was mainly just curious if anyone knew why it's there.
Going back and checking I found all these downloaded : Shop for HP supplies, Customer participation program, Document manager, Imaging device functions, Photo smart essentials, Solution center, and HP updates. And the really wierd thing is, there is only one Dell download and that is a Dell Resorce CD. There is nothing else DELL on this computer.
I even got the wild idea that maybe the last time this computer was in the shop, it got switched with an HP.....that maybe an HP was placed into the housing of my Dell.

The shop may have used an HP disk to re-install the OS. When you boot the computer do you see a Dell splash screen?

'Imaging device functions' and 'photo smart essentials' might have come from something like an HP camera and the software that may have been installed for it. The other stuff could be junk that came along with it.
