I have a problem with opening Excel filed PLEASE READ MY WHOLE PROBLEM, ITS NOT SIMPLY A FILE ASSOCIATION PROBLEM.

The files will open through File\open within excel, but if you open them directly from Explorer, they do not. This is Office XP.

I've tried the built-in repair function for Office XP, I've done Office updates, MS updates, windows updates, redone file associations.

I also did the "excel /regserver" command.

Reinstalling office is not an option since I do not have the disc.

Any advice?

That sure sounds like a 'File Association problem'. Have you tried the following:

Right click a XLS file > Open With > Choose Program > browse to Excel > select it and Also select 'Always use the selected program to open this type of file'.

Note that Excel problems should be directed to the Office software forum.

Sorry, one detail I forgot to mention.

When i try to open files through Explorer, they actually open Excel, but not the sheets in the file. They only appear when i open files from within excel "file\open..."

If you go to Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types, xls, Advanced, Open, Edit. What does it say in the "Application used to perform action:" box?

FYI, for future reference, Office questions should really be asked in the Office Software Forum.

I'm sorry to repeat myself, but its NOT AN ASSOCIATION PROBLEM. Yes, .xls files are set to open with Excel. This part is correct, it just wont open the sheet when it brings up Excel.

Here's a video of what I'm talking about. NOTE: THE FILE ASSOCIATION IS RIGHT. AGAIN, IT'S RIGHT.

Sorry for the angry all caps, but after two of the same responses i must get that point accross.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you trying to open files created by the same version of Excel?

You didn't receive two of the "same" responses. I simply asked you to type in what's in that particular field. Did you bother to look?

I can't believe I'm telling you this, but check Tools, Options, General, Ignore other applications. Is that checked? If so, uncheck it.

Hi アンドリュー,

You need to edit the regiestry to fix this issue.

1. Backup reg key by exporting it:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Excel

2. Delete reg key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Excel

3. Open the excel file as the user having the issue. Excel will restore the registry key you deleted in step 2. You will need to close excel again (because the problem still looks like it exists!).

4. Open the excel file again and it should be fixed!
