Subject: Wrong OS Listed
OS: XP Home SP2
CPU/Ram: 1.6 p4 512
Comment:

When booting into safe mode the only choice of OS to boot to is XP Media Center Edition.Only problem is the OS is XP Home OEM and has been installed on this computer for 3 1/2 years with very few problems.It's
a completely legal install.When checking My Computer > Properties everything is listed correctly,and nothing new was installed lately except MS updates. Any ideas? I don't want to anger Uncle Bill.Also,Boot.ini lists OS as Media Center Edition

Thanks TC

The boot.ini file is what's showing up on your screen when you run the process to boot into safemode. You could change the text in the boot.ini file, ONLY the test that shows the incorrect OS and the machine should boot fine.

The Purpose of the Boot.ini File in Windows XP

My Home boot.ini file says:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

The last two lines are actually one long line.

you can do those things to change it but you may want to figure out WHY it was changed. If you didnt do it then something did. Maybe the wrong updates or something were installed. But that still does not make much sense to me. Let us know if you find out.

All you have to do is change the description. That is what is between the "" in the boot.ini.

I bet with regular boot you go straight to windows and this is why you never noticed the description.

The description is just that, a description. No effect with Billy Bob or any thing else.

I had a Sony, which I've since given to my daughter, and in safe mode it too listed Media Center Edition, which it clearly was not.

The system ran fine so I never fooled with it. Why bother, if it's not broke...

I suspect the cause may have been an update from Uncle Bill.

Thanks for the replies people. I was thinking more along the lines of Scott,what or why did it change? Well it probably won't be the last thing that changes itself in Windows.
