On my old computer I only had Microsoft Works Word Processor, which saves documents with the extension .wps

I bought a new computer and now use Corel Word Perfect X3, which does not recognize these files.

Anyone know how to make it recognize them? Or have I lost them?

As you say, Works WP uses extension .wps

Corel uses extension .wpd

You need a converter from .wps to .wpd (Works is one of the more awkward formats). If you can't find a freebie you should find a 30 day trial which might be long enough to convert all your files.

Even then conversion is seldom perfect but at least the general text will be present and can be tidied up.

This is definitely one for the Office Software forum, although I would couch it differently because double posting is not strictly allowed on these forums.

Right click on one of your .wps files and choose, "Open With" and then select Word Pad.
Or Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Word Pad, Now go up to File and click on the Open option and direct it to the .wps files and in the File Type change it to All Documents, then click on one of the .wps files and then click on the Open Tab.

Unless you still have ready access to your old computer with Works (so you could re-save in another format), the next simplest way may be to download/install a converter from Microsoft, and convert to RTF (even Wordpad can use that).

Microsoft Works/Word Converter

RTF (Rich Text Format) hols most of the principal formatting (bold, underline, italic, colour, etc). Wordperfect will have no problem with it.

You might be lucky but I have Word/Works/WordPerfect on my machine. Before responding I created a Works document (.wps) and couldn't even find any readable text when I called it up in either WordPad or NotePad - to my surprise.

I think both Works WP and Works Spreadsheet (.wks) are the worlds worst to convert. I reckon MS stitched things up very nicely, although there is a MS download which converts .wps to Word.

There are converters .wps to .pdf out there.

Derek,
I did the same thing, having MS office, & MS Works, created a .wps and then opened it in Word Pad and yes at the top it was unreadable text, but as I scrolled down I did come to the text I had created.

I really thought I must have missed it. Just tried again
and none of the text was anywhere to be seen on the single page in WordPad. I even did a search for a couple of the words (which were still there in the .wps version) and it didn't find either of them.

I can only imagine it varies with WP versions - very strange.
