Comment:

I reset my network security from WEP to WPA-PSK. I am not having any problems connecting to the gateway with this laptop.
However, when I open the Network Properties page, my Network Key only shows as having 8 digits, while I entered 63 digits in my Netgear WiFi router.
I am not concerned about looks, I only care that the security is up and running.
Thanks again, mb

in some cases I have seen Windows bullet (either with dot/asterix) password fields with more or less characters than the actual password. This is a method of protecting anyone from detecting the actual length of and therefore hacking it faster. I can not say for sure that this is the case with your router, but it might be a possibility.

Additionally if you are concerned about the security being enabled you can disconnect and re-connect the wireless network on the device that is attaching wirelessly. It should prompt you to re-enter the correct encryption key. Also if you experience any problems you can try power cycling your router (which might be a good idea anyway) and also connecting wireless from a new device that hasn't tried to connect before.... (invite some friend with a wireless notebook over for dinner ;)

Hope that Helps!

Michael
