worrying boot problems

OS: XP pro
CPU/Ram: PIII 700 / 386mb sdram

when booting up my pc keeps resetting sometimes at 4 or five times before it gets into windows

it usually happens after the windows xp loading screen or just before that i think.

also it keeps saying that windows didnt shutdown properly last time (not true) and needs to be checks. these scans usually weild a lot of messages like "deleting corrupt attribute record (128, "") from file segment" or "deleting orphan file record segment 2326"

what could be causing this

How old is your Hard Drive?

Have you defraged lately?

Also try the Diagnostic startup (via msconfig) and see if you run into the same problem.

Also run a virus scan just in case I believe on of the Klez virus will have this effect.

The drive may be an issue as already suggested.

Another possibilty.. RAM may be failing on one or more stick...

If the suggestions re' drive etc. as in post #1 don't resolve it, investigate RAM?

True RAM is a possiblity usually forget that as another option......thanks trvlr

the hard drive is barely 6 months old. i'll look into teh ram thing. but that wouldnt explain all these error messages in scandisk
