This machine is on a small Windows workgroup network, mostly WinXP Pro and (unfortunately) some WinXP Home. On this machine, network connections are made OK on booting but (usually shortly) after disappear. When i check services, I see that the Workstation service has stopped (its set for "automatic" start) and restarting it brings back the network. There is nothing in the event log (or anything else that i can find) to indicate why it stopped. This machine has Norton AV 10 (so that's a suspect in my mind but nothing directly points to that). No other machine on the network is afflicted this way. Any ideas? Many thanks in advance.

If event viewer is silent then consider a reload of the OS if you already have all current patches. There was a security issue that was patched. The only other idea would be to run a performance monitor. I guess it would be possible that a device driver or even malware would be an issue. More likely data wrong. See also if Norton provides any logs. It is possible that to protect your system from malware or attack the app drops service but one would think some log exists. I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.
